Make Straight the Path - 2nd Sunday of Advent

Sometimes people have asked me, “When should I go to Confession?” I usually respond, “When something hurts”. Just like we go to the doctor when something hurts, so too we turn to the Lord for spiritual health in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The people who heard John the Baptist preach were also hurting.
They realized they had strayed from the covenant, turned away from God. His baptism of them in the River Jordan brought them a new lease on life. In our Advent season we may also recognize in our own lives what hurts – broken relationships, fears, doubts, lies, bad habits, etc. The Lord calls us to prepare for the celebration of his birth by recognizing what hurts and turn to him, to “make straight the path”, so that his abundant life can come to us undeterred.
Each week of our Advent Journey provides us with abundant opportunities to turn to the Lord, “make straight the path” of our life, and dispel what makes us hurt.
